Larry Shaffer grew up in Ohio and graduated from London High School in 1970. Of course, then he joined the US Navy and received two years intensive training to become an electronics technician. He was assigned five different ships through the Viet Nam war, Lebanon, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Haiti. Larry also served at various other hot spots that didn't capture the attention of the press. He attended St. Leo’s College campus on the Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia from 1981 through 1983. He was only shy a couple credits in obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Automated Information Systems. Larry Shaffer then became a commissioned officer in 1983. His commission was from President Ronald Reagan. He finally retired a seasoned officer and took up full-time writing of novels and poetry. He also runs several companies involved in selling electronic artwork of all kinds and publishing the artists who create the art.

Larry Shaffer became a resident of Florida in 1989. He had planned early on to live in Florida. After retiring from the Navy, he moved to the Tampa Bay area. In 1997, Larry moved to Marathon to spend the rest of his days. He is a member of the Florida Keys Council of the Arts as well as a member of the American Legion Post 154. He worked at Boot Key Bridge for the City of Marathon for almost five years. Larry Shaffer also worked at the city marina for five weeks when their staffing was low.

Larry’s experience runs the gamut from cleaning toilets early in his Navy career to being a department head of an echelon three Navy SEAL staff command. Echelon three staff commands are only three levels removed from the President of the United States.

Larry Shaffer has attended almost every meeting and workshop concerning the City of Marathon since January 2003. He has written many articles and columns in all four local newspapers. He studied all the pertinent laws, ordinances, and documentation that concern the City of Marathon. Larry has extensive managerial and leadership skills based on practical experience. He has the experience, skill, desire, time, and willingness to be your next city council member.
